With deep sorrow and respect, we bid farewell to Hayden Panettiere, who passed away suddenly at the age of only 36. She was an actress of exceptional presence who captured the hearts of audiences already as a child and later became unforgettable in defining roles as a young woman.

From the very beginning she stood in front of the camera — already as a toddler in commercials, then as Sarah Roberts in the soap opera One Life to Live, as Sheryl Yoast in Remember the Titans, and as the hockey-loving Casey in Ice Princess. She became known worldwide as Claire Bennet, the cheerleader with superpowers in Heroes. Later she delighted audiences as Juliette Barnes in the series Nashville, returned as Kirby Reed in the Scream films, and showed her range in further projects — including most recently the thriller Sleepwalker. She also left her mark as a voice actress (among other things in the Kingdom Hearts series) and with her music.

Hayden Panettiere was far more than her roles. She openly and courageously confronted the darker sides of early fame, postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya, and struggles with addiction. In her 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning she looked honestly at her childhood, her mother’s role as “momager,” the tabloid attacks, and the long path toward healing. She spoke about the loss of her brother Jansen in 2023 and about how, despite everything, she continued to fight and rebuild her career. Her father Skip Panettiere described her as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

She is survived by her daughter Kaya, her parents, and all those who were touched by her work and her openness. Shortly before her death she had been looking forward to spending time with Kaya around her 37th birthday. In this moment of grief, our deepest sympathy goes first and foremost to her family.

Why Speculation Should Be Set Aside Now

Authorities (Greenville Police and the Coroner’s Office) have confirmed that Hayden Panettiere died of cardiac arrest. The official cause of death and the exact circumstances remain the subject of ongoing investigations (autopsy completed, further toxicological and other tests still pending). Initial findings indicate no signs of violence or suspicious circumstances.

Rumors, unconfirmed claims about overdoses, personal relationships, or other details currently circulating in the media and on social networks harm the family in an already unbearable moment. The relatives have expressly asked for privacy while they process this unimaginable loss. Speculation does not replace facts, hurts those left behind, and distracts from what truly matters: the memory of a young woman who, despite great personal challenges, brought light and talent into the world.

Let us remember Hayden Panettiere with dignity and compassion — for her roles, her voice, and the courage with which she made her struggles public.

Rest in peace.
